What We Believe

The Power of Right Thinking

“Such is the power of right thinking that it cancels and erases everything unlike itself. It answers every question, solves all problems, is the solution to every difficulty. It is like the Sunlight of Eternal Truth bursting through the clouds of obscurity and bathing all life in a celestial glory. It is the Absolute with which we are dealing and nothing less!” ~ Ernest Holmes

We believe in God, the living Spirit Almighty; one, indestructible, absolute, and self-existent Cause. This One manifests Itself in and through all creation, but is not absorbed by Its creation. The manifest universe is the body of God; it is the logical and necessary outcome of the infinite self-knowingness of God. We believe in the individualization of the Spirit in Us, and that all people are individualizations of the One Spirit.

We believe in the eternality, the immortality, and the continuity of the individual soul, forever and ever expanding.

We believe that heaven is within us, and that we experience it to the degree that we become conscious of it.

We believe the ultimate goal of life to be a complete freedom from all discord of every nature, and that this goal is sure to be attained by all.

We believe in the unity of all life, and that the highest God and the innermost God is one God. We believe that God is personal to all who feel this indwelling presence.

We believe in the direct revelation of truth through our intuitive and spiritual nature, and that anyone may become a revealer of truth who lives in close contact with the indwelling God.

We believe that the Universal Spirit, which is God, operates through a Universal Mind, which is the Law of God; and that we are surrounded by this Creative Mind which receives the direct impress of our thought and acts upon it.

We believe in the healing of the sick through the power of this Mind.

We believe in the control of conditions through the power of this Mind.

We believe in the eternal Goodness, the eternal Loving-kindness, and the eternal Givingness of Life to all.

We believe in our own soul, our own spirit, and our own destiny; for we understand that the life of all is God.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Science of Mind?

Science of Mind is a spiritual philosophy for the modern man and woman. It is based on the Truth which arises in every culture in the form of science, philosophy, and religion. The Centres for Spiritual Living views religion as a source of wisdom for revealing the Truth about the seemingly unknown forces that shape our universe. This enables us to participate in our own life as a co-creator with the Divine.

What is New Thought?

New Thought was recognized as “The Religion of Healthy-Mindedness” by William James in The Varieties of Religious Experience. It has no one creed, but has affinities to idealistic philosophical traditions of all ages and places. New Thought like the name, continues to develop conceptually, educationally, and organizationally.

Is this New Age?

Centres for Spiritual Living teaches a New Thought philosophy. Although many people with “new age” leanings are attracted to Centres for Spiritual Living for the broad scope of teachings and the openness of our community. CSL Edmonton Metro honors the paths that lead to a greater understanding of Spirit, whether they be Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, New Age, or any other uplifting spiritual paths.

Is this related to Scientology?

No. Religious Science was founded in 1927 by Dr. Ernest Holmes. Scientology was founded in 1960 by L. Ron Hubbard. Other than the use of the word “science” in both names there are no similarities.

Is this Christian Science?

No, but Ernest Holmes studied with many of the spiritual leaders of his time, as well as the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science. Religious Science attracts many from the Christian Science tradition.

Do you go to doctors?

Yes. Religious Scientists believe that all is God, and that God is expressed through doctors and medicine just as God is expressed through all of the physical universe. Religious Science believes in spiritual as well as physical healing, and Religious Science Practitioners often work in conjunction with doctors and other physical and mental health practitioners to facilitate healing.

Is this a cult?

No. Religious Science teaches that each individual has the power over and the responsibility for his or her own life. Religious Science highly discourages the following of or dependence upon any one person, including founder Ernest Holmes or any present ministers or teachers. Religious Science challenges people to think for themselves and only believe what rings true for them. One must look into one’s own heart for truth.

What about meditation?

Meditation is the time honored technique for taming, training and transforming the mind. Religious Science endorses all forms of meditation, from creative visualization to the more traditional mind stilling techniques. It is through meditation that we come into a state of God communion and thereby experience a greater sense of unity of all life.

What about prayer?

Religious Science honors and endorses all forms of sincere prayer. In addition, it teaches a unique and scientific form of prayer called Spiritual Mind Treatment. This is a powerful, affirmative method of prayer that was developed by Dr. Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science. Spiritual Mind Treatment is a prayer of recognition of Spirit’s Omniscience, Omnipotence, and Omnipresence, and a realization of man’s unity with Spirit. Through prayer we recognize a spiritual law, and put ourselves in alignment with it.

What is an affirmation?

The term affirmation is normally associated with a verbal statement that is made about some goal that we are trying to achieve, or some experience we desire to have. However, the act of affirmation is really much more than that. It is an act of faith. It is the ability to put aside your doubt and fear in order to act as if your desired goal were already a reality. In this sense, an affirmation can be any statement, act, or symbolic gesture that affirms the reality of your intentions. Through the process of affirmation we “act as if” our highest aspirations were already a reality.

What about sin?

The original meaning of sin was simply to fall short of or “miss the mark” of spiritual perfection. A sin is not a thing, it is merely an error in thought which produces a consequence in our lives.

What about evil?

Religious Science does not deny the appearance of evil. However, it teaches that evil does not exist as a force or power in the world. That which is called evil is merely the obstruction, or inversion, of the only power acting, which is Spirit. The obstruction of Spirit’s expression always occurs in the mind through the holding of false beliefs. According to Religious Science, the only presence acting in the universe is God, which is always Good. Evil is merely the way that we withhold our expression and experience of that good by accepting false beliefs into our minds.

Do you believe in the devil?

Religious Science believes that, since the only power acting anywhere is God, the devil simply cannot exist as a force acting in opposition to God’s expression through Spirit. Therefore, there really is no devil. There is only the manifestation of falsely held beliefs within our minds, which produces that appearance of some sinister invisible force, or being, acting in our lives. To blame unpleasant conditions and circumstances on the devil, or anyone else, is a way of avoiding responsibility for our own experience of life.

What about Heaven and Hell?

Religious Science believes that heaven and hell are states of mind. We experience heaven when we are in harmony with the Life that surrounds us. Hell is a state of mind that we experience when we have separated ourselves from God.

What about death?

Religious Science teaches the eternality of life. It accepts that our physical bodies operate within a natural cycle of birth and death. However, even though we may have a body, we are not just our body. What we really are is the Life that animates our body, and that Life is infinite and immortal. As we become increasing identified with our divine and eternal nature, our underlying fear of death begins to dissolve and our experience of life become more joyous.

Do you believe in reincarnation?

Religious Science neither endorses nor rejects any particular theory or concept of reincarnation. Since life is eternal, there are an unlimited number of possibilities for its evolvement after the experience of physical death. In Religious Science, we accept the on-goingness of life and we deal with what is before us in the present moment.

Do you believe in miracles?

Everything that occurs in our lives is simply the out picturing of our consciousness operating through the Law of Mind. Therefore, those events that seem to be miraculous in nature are actually the Law acting at a level beyond our awareness. As we evolve our consciousness, what previously seemed miraculous becomes a natural, normal and understandable way of life. In actuality, there is only one miracle, this is Life itself.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

In Religious Science, Christ is viewed as a universal principle rather than a person. It is the principle of God expressing through humanity. Jesus of Nazareth was a human personality through which the Christ Principle, or Divine Personality, expressed itself on Earth. The principle of Jesus Christ represents the mystical marriage of our inner spirit with our outer personality. This union produces an expression of Life that includes both, yet is greater than either. The potential for this expression lies within each one of us. Therefore, Jesus is viewed as a great example for humanity, rather than the great exception. Ernest Holmes, founder of the philosophy of Religious Science, wrote: “Religious Science does not deny the divinity of Jesus; it does affirm the divinity of all people. It does not deny that Jesus was the son of God; but affirms that all beings are children of God. It does not deny that the Kingdom of God was revealed through Jesus; but affirms that the Kingdom of God is also revealed through you and me.”

Are you Christians?

Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science, came out of a Christian tradition. He studied all of the world’s religions, and synthesized what he saw to be the truths running through them all, free of any particular dogma. He began the philosophy with the intention that all churches, especially Christian ones, would embrace the philosophy and incorporate those teachings into their own. His book The Science of Mind brings clear understanding to the teachings of Jesus. Religious Science comes out of the Christian tradition in the sense that we believe in the teachings of Jesus and use them to create a “Heaven on Earth”.

Why is this called Religious Science?

Ernest Holmes used the terms “Science of Mind”, which he called the book that describes his synthesis of the truths running through all of the religions of the world, and “Religious Science” interchangeably. He believed that religion and science were truly complimentary, and named his organization the Church of Religious Science to show that. He believed that, eventually, science would prove what the mystics have been saying for thousands of years about the nature of God, human beings, and the universe. His beliefs have been borne out by many modern scientists, who have found that the universe is truly made up of energy. Religious Science, along with all of the mystics of the ages, knows that that energy is God.

What Does Your "V" Symbol Mean?

The Circle represents the fullness and the allness of God, that which has no beginning and has no ending; that which is Omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient.

The Three Sections represent three modes of being or aspects of God.

The top section represents “Spirit,” the aspect of God that is Pure Intelligence, Pure Love, Pure Creative Energy. When the Scripture says “God said, Let there be light,” it was this aspect of God that made the decision for there to be light. This aspect of God is the Creative Force behind all creation.

The middle section represents “Law” or “Soul,” the aspect of God that simply accepts and processes that which Spirit gives it to process. This aspect does not evaluate or judge what it receives, it just creates it. For example, when it is written in Genesis that “God said, Let there be light,” this mode of God, simply said, “Ok.” It did not say, “Well, I think I would rather not make light today; instead, I think I’ll make water.” No, it simply responded to the directive given it by Spirit.

The bottom section represents “Body” or “Effect,” which is the result of an idea from Spirit and the corresponding action of the Law. In the above example from Genesis, the light would be the result and, therefore, represented by the bottom section.

Finally, the “V” represents the “Descent of Spirit into Form,” or said another way, it represents the activity described above. At the level of Spirit (or the opening of the “V”), there is pure potentiality. Infinite possibilities exist at the level. An idea is then sent forth into the Law and a particular, singular creation is formed (the point of the “V”). The “V” represents this process.

In Religious Science, we not only believe that this is the way God operates and creates, we believe that it is also the way that we, as creations of God, operate and create.

Our Spiritual Practices

Spiritual Practice is the ongoing process of personal evolution.

As we cultivate ourselves and focus attention upon the expansion of our awareness and compassion, we begin to create the higher vision of ourselves and through our intention we begin to live up to this ideal. Through Spiritual Practice we are able to transform our thinking and consequently our lives which embraces the flow of the divine into our lives and unlimited blessings flow.

We have somehow begun to believe that forgiveness is hard and only through clenched teeth will we ever be able to forgive … (you know who).

But what if forgiveness was easy? What if all that we had been taught concerning forgiveness has been a lie brought down through generations that no one felt in authority to change until now? We have been given the authority from the very beginning of our lives to live the life of our choosing! Forgiveness is a choice and it’s our choice! Find out how easy it can be to just let go and go back to living your life with no regret and in total freedom.

When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free. ~ Catherine Ponder

Within New Thought, one of the core principles is that there is One Power, and only One Power, God/Spirit/Nature (whatever you wish to call it) and this power is good, all good. As we give thanks for this good, which is our Good, wonderful things start to happen in our lives, and we develop a greater attitude of gratitude. It is not so much that the events in our lives change dramatically, but we begin to see them differently and as our thinking changes, so do our experiences.

Learn to use this attitude of gratitude! We encourage students to sign up for our Foundations Course and discover for yourself the power that is always with you awaiting your recognition of it to bring for you a greater experience of life.

He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has. ~ Epictetus

If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice. ~ Meister Eckhart

What is Prayer? Traditionally, prayer has most commonly been seen as a way of calling the attention of some distant deity to give us a benefit or avoid a loss. The effectiveness of prayer was thought to depend on the worthiness of the one praying, the earnestness of the petition, and some bargained promise of behavioral change. (If you give me this, then I will be, do or stop something else) That kind of prayer just doesn’t make sense to a new thought community.

But an Affirmative Prayer or Spiritual Mind Treatment is a cornerstone for our community at Metro. Our approach is fundamentally different than traditional prayer. Rather than hoping to catch the attention of an anthropomorphic deity sitting on a throne in the sky and persuade Him to change His thinking about us, we believe the only purpose of our affirmative prayer is to change our own thinking-about the nature of God, and thereby change our own beliefs.

We believe there is a Creative Intelligence (call it Universe, God, Spirit, Nature, He or She) “It really doesn’t care what you call it”, but whatever it is, it can be used by any person to create greater health, prosperity or love in mind, body or total life experience.

When you change your thinking you can change your life.

Spiritual Mind Treatment is an affirmative prayer that recognizes the oneness and wholeness of our spiritual and the human experiences. “Treatment” focuses in on the transformation of our root beliefs and through that transformation can come a new awareness of the possibilities that are inherent in a opened state of consciousness and a new opportunity for growth.

There are five steps in Spiritual Mind Treatment

Recognition

In this step we recognize that there is only ONE power throughout the Universe. Not a power of good and a power of evil, but ONLY ONE POWER!

Example of the first step: There is only one power, one presence, one infinite intelligence throughout this Universe.

Unification

Unification means we are united with this one power! It flows through everything, is the energy of everything and therefore must be everything and that means me and you right now.

Example of the second step: There is only one power, one presence, one infinite intelligence throughout this Universe. It is the essence of who I am and I am the essence of what it is! It is everywhere present at all times and therefore must be within me.

Realization

The realization step is where one is realizing that since God/Great Spirit/Good is flowing through everything and through each of us all the time that we must only realize and accept the truth that “I am one with whatever good I am asking for and in that knowledge it manifests in my life for highest good.”

Example of the third step: There is only one power, one presence, one infinite intelligence throughout this Universe. It is the essence of who I am and I am the essence of what it is! It is everywhere present at all times and therefore must be within me. I now, in this moment, fully accept and fully embody that perfect health is my divine birthright and therefore everything within me that needs to be healed is already healed and I fully embodied not just the idea of perfect health but the manifestation of health and wholeness!

Thanksgiving

At this point it is very important to express gratitude not for what might be given, but for what has already been given on the Spiritual Realm. (We are spiritual beings having a human experience). This is considered one of the most important steps. The feeling of gratitude and thanksgiving is essential. Feel this thanksgiving deeply and feel the beauty of the fact that what you are asking for will manifest in your life.

Example of the fourth step: There is only one power, one presence, one infinite intelligence throughout this Universe. It is the essence of who I am and I am the essence of what it is! It is everywhere present at all times and therefore must be within me. I now in this moment fully accept and fully embody that perfect health is my divine birthright and therefore everything within me that needs to be healed is already healed and I fully embodied not just the idea of perfect health but the manifestation of health and wholeness! I am truly grateful and thankful for the life of health and wholeness that I have within the spiritual realm and let it manifest as health and wholeness throughout my life and my body of affairs.

Release

At this point you are releasing your word into the Universal Mind, God/Great Spirit or what physicists call the Unified Field of First Cause knowing that all that you have asked for that is good and is now made manifest. You have planted the seeds of health and wholeness and they will manifest according to the Universal Law of Cause and Effect.

This scientific formula is delightful because it is provable. We do not say it is the ONLY way to pray, but we are quite confident that once you learn how to do it and experience the results. You will affirm with us that this is indeed a great way to let your prayers be heard.

Example of the fifth step: There is only one power, one presence, one infinite intelligence throughout this Universe. It is the essence of who I am and I am the essence of what it is! It is everywhere present at all times and therefore must be within me. I now, in this moment. fully accept and fully embody that perfect health is my divine birthright and therefore everything within me that needs to be healed is already healed and I fully embodied not just the idea of perfect health but the manifestation of health and wholeness! I am truly grateful and thankful for the life of health and wholeness that I have within the spiritual realm and let it manifest as health and wholeness throughout my life and my body of affairs. I now release this prayer treatment into the Universe knowing it is already being acted upon. It is so and so it is or Amen!

So who do we direct our prayers to? We believe that we are all of God, the One Mind. We can call this mind Brahma, or Christ, or many other words that humanity used for God, but the word we use for God only changes as we change. The power and vitality of prayer lies in the awareness of our union with this power and presence. Our approach to Spirit is direct, through our own consciousness. There is no middle man to go through! The Kingdom… is within.

It shall be done unto you as you believe. In dealing with the Divine, we are dealing with a force we cannot fool. Spirit can only do for us only what It can do through us. If our prayers are for love, we must be receptive to love and be loving. If our prayers are for abundance or prosperity, we must be open to receive it and stop constantly looking at what we don’t have! If we find that our prayer is “not answered”, then we must go within asking, “What is it I need to know, understand or allow?” We ask Divine Power within you to clearly guide us. The answers are always within.

Remember, we can always pray! Long prayers, short prayers, out loud, alone or with someone else. Although we teach Spiritual Mind Treatment, which is a specific formula, we believe that prayer is always good and there is always good that comes through it. God, the Divine Mind within each of us already knows the intentions within our own mind.

Prayer Works! We encourage you to sign up for our Foundations Course and discover the power that is always there, always within and through your use of it, you will prove it for yourself.

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul. ~ John Muir

Prayers are heard in heaven in proportion to our faith. Little faith gets very great mercies, but great faith still greater. ~ Spurgeon

Meditation enables us to be aware of our Divine Unity (oneness with the Divine)

Meditation enables us to slow down our habitual thinking so we can begin to see patterns of creation and thereby to tap into the great expanse of God/Life/Love within us.

Meditation describes practices that self-regulate the body and mind, thereby affecting consciousness, spiritual connectedness via mental events by engaging a specific attentional set. … Regulation of attention is the central commonality across the many divergent methods.

Even the most beautifully sounding musical instrument can fall out of tune once in a while. The same is true for our minds and our spiritual life. Whether we struggle to focus, battle with stress or get tangled up in too many thoughts, sometimes — for whatever reason — we simply fall out of tune. On one hand your mind is a finely tuned, delicate and complex instrument, while on the other hand, it doesn’t come with an owner’s manual.

Meditation enables us to slow down our habitual thinking so we can begin to see patterns of creation, open our consciousness to divinely inspired inspiration and thereby to tap into the great expanse of God/Life/Love within us.

The mind can go in a thousand directions, but on this beautiful path, I walk in peace. With each step, the wind blows. With each step, a flower blooms. ~ Thích Nhât Hạnh

The Way to do is to be. ~ Lao Tzu

To understand the immeasurable, the mind must be extraordinarily quiet, still. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti

Listening to Spirit allows us find “The Way.”

We become less influenced by the popular or entrenched beliefs of a particular society or culture, and we become much more available to hear Spirit’s call. We become inspired by the ideas held in the mind of the One, and they begin to live and express through us. We begin to be able to articulate them and to live and embody and reveal them. The feeling we have is that we have come home. We are fulfilling our heart’s desire, which is the same thing as God’s will for us.

Too often we speak a good talk, but fail to listen for the message! We can hear the message at anytime and anywhere, but the one thing that remains constant is that it is us that must listen.

Your vision of life (whatever it may be) is already an accomplished fact within the mind of God. It’s already a complete idea in Spirit, so we don’t need to pray for its accomplishment. What we do need to pray for is out ability and our integrity to be able to get out of our way and let the goodness express. Using the vision process is always self-examination. It’s never, “God, I want this. Make this happen.” It’s always, “What do I have to become to live the vision, to manifest it, to reveal it?” The visioning process, then, is a process of transformation of the individual or of the group.

Our Prayers are fulfilled through rising to the challenge we are experiencing such that our faith is kindled from a spark of inchoate desire to a mighty flame of faith through our inner transformation and we become the answer we have been seeking ~ Dana Allen

Sacred Service is a way of helping ourselves by helping others.

We serve our community and ourselves by connecting with others in a fun and meaningful way. Just as there is a diversity of people in our spiritual community, there are many ways to put your unique skills, talents, and interests to use in a way that reveals love, passion and purpose and celebrates life within our community and within the world at large.

When we wish to live a deeply spiritual life, we develop competency in the basics of living within the complexity of this physical world, and develop emotional intelligence in understanding ourselves and others.

We help ourselves when we help other people! Remember… “We are One”

Ah, yes … Giving … The Centre for Spiritual Living Edmonton-Metro gives back to organizations with in our City, Province and Country. We also contribute to organizations throughout the world that honours life, feeds and clothes the hungry that give us some of our spiritual food that nourishes. We give to these community in identifiable ways. We don’t give because we have to or because it’s mandatory for us to give. We give because we like to give, it makes us feel good to give and it helps those who may not be able to help themselves at this moment help themselves in the next moment. True giving feels great and know that because we are a not for profit organization if you decide to give to our Centre you will receive a tax receipt.

The Spiritual Practice of Conscious Giving is an invitation to deepen our connection with Spirit and know that its infinite good is already within us; to give with an open, joyful, loving heart; and grow by stretching our consciousness in the arena of giving.

In the words of Ernest Holmes, “There is an Infinite Law of the Spirit, or Law of Life, which tends to multiply our gifts, because in so doing It multiplies Its own experience, Its own pleasure, Its own fruition.” This quote reminds us that, in giving, we are avenues of Divine distribution, and Spirit experiences the fruits of Its givingness through us. How wonderful is that!

Centre for Spiritual Living Edmonton Metro offers many ways for each of us to explore Conscious Giving. One way of giving is to give your time. We hope you find an area of service that opens your heart, as you share your gift of self with others.

We may expand our understanding of prosperity to take us beyond money alone and truly reflect the abundant nature of Life itself, and our right to live abundant lives by exploring the truth about money and what it stands for in our lives. We have the opportunity to gain freedom from money having power over us through challenging ourselves to give from the heart with love.

We teach that tithing is not a practice we should do out of a sense of obligation, but something we choose to do out of a generous spirit of love and giving. We promote the message that your tithe is to be given freely and joyously to whatever feeds you spiritually. Most importantly tithing is a demonstration of faith that God is our source of abundance.

The proper aim of giving is to put the recipients in a state where they no longer need our gifts. ~ C.S. Lewis (The Four Loves, 1960)

Deeds of giving are the very foundations of the world. ~ from the Mishna, Pirkei Avot 1:2

What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal. ~ Albert Pike (1809 — 1891)

I would rather have it said, ‘He lived usefully,’ than, ‘He died rich.’ ~ Benjamin Franklin (letter to his mother, 1750)

Today I set my intention to support love and joy by walking the high metaphysical path.

Unafraid of life’s challenges, I am filled with courage and creativity.

As I walk through life, I am guided by God to my Good; knowing the truth of my DivineUnity, I abide in tranquility.

Great Spirit empowers me, renews my strength and thus I have the courage to do the right thing, and the wisdom to speak the right words at the right time.

History is filled with examples of challenge and today I may face challenges of my own or be made aware of challenges for others, but I do not fear crisis or chaos for I walk with Spirit on the path of beauty and am divinely led to perfect solutions.

I am aware of what is going on in my life, and my community and thus informed and empowered, I consciously choose courage and grace regardless of appearances, or seeming opposition. I am guided by the divine and discover love, joy and goodness as God flows to me and through me.

I embody compassionate action, fearlessly forgiving all who I once thought wronged me. I walk the high metaphysical path, loving, learning and living the truth of my DivineUnity with every step I take, I am forever enfolded within the Divine, even past the end of space or time and so it is. ~ Avalon

Every Sunday at the Centre for Spiritual Living Edmonton Metro, we teach how to embody love, live truth and thus manifest a life of beauty and joy. We teach a life of freedom! Come visit us and learn how you, too, can live the well-lived life!

We look forward to seeing you!

Love can move the world;

come love the world with me!

“Our Prayers are fulfilled through rising to the challenge we are experiencing such that our faith is kindled from a spark of inchoate desire to a mighty flame of faith through our inner transformation and we become the answer we have been seeking” ~ Dana Allen
